So it does work without SSL?

     Yes

Same port?

No: 443 does not work. Orig. port 7000 didn't work

URL is exactly identical in both cases except for SSL:

     Working URL: http://sys-testsp/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx

     Non-Working URL: https://sys-testsp.acmecorp.com/DocTest/Forms/AllItems.aspx (scrubbed)

Different site collections

Pointing to the exact same PDF (same file copied with the same name)?

Works with port 80, does not work with https.

What is the exact Acrobat version?

     Acrobat: V 11.0.05

     Reader: 11.0.05

What is the exact SharePoint version?

     Sharepoint Foundation 2010

What is the exact error msg w/o abbreviations?

"The URL you have provided could not be reached. Please verify that the URL is correct and that the network location is reachable."

Have you tried it with a newly created PDF created by 11.x that's blank with a name like File.pdf

     Yes, still no luck
