How to set Adobe as default PDF viewer (Windows 10)

Hello,

Looking to see if anyone has come up with a solution for Windows 10 and edge taking over the PDF file association. We've installed Adobe Acrobat Pro on our systems, set the default PDF viewer as Adobe, then for some users it will revert back to Edge. I know that is has to do with registry scanning and Windows seeing that it's changed and tries to fix this for you and reverts it back to Edge again. You use to be able to fix this pretty easily with GPO's but with Windows 10 (from what I read) things have changed quite a bit. I have played around with XML files to fix the association but from what I understand this only works with a new profile on first log on.

Anyone have any solutions, suggestions?

I am having problem installing Acrobat Reader ( Acrobat Reader DC) on Win10 & Win7 system. Some are successful other failed. When i install Manually i get error "Windows installer does not permit patching of managed advertised products. At least one feature of the product must be installed before applying the patch".

Method of install:

- I have tried installing using Local Admin

     - Same error(Error Above)

- Tried installing using Network Admin

     - Same error(Error Above)

Deployed using SolarWinds Patch Manager as well (has pre-built package)

     - It will show successful

          - However when i check Program Files, can't find reader.

Got the package from

     - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Install for all versions

               Also downloaded from

     - Adobe - Adobe Acrobat Reader DC Distribution

I also found in another forum on Adobe (Windows installer stops installation ) to do an reader cleanup however after few min the program would crush.

     - after restart and trying to re-install got the same Error

answer brings it to the point.

As IT-Service Manager with responsibility for license management i have been annoyed for a long time, the software manufacturers can not agree on a standard for decades.With Acrobat DC Adobe is now completely undermining the practice.As the previous speaker wrote: Each ITAM / License Management Tool evaluates the configuration / software items to recognize the installations and licenses.

Please train your software packagers, instead of recommending workarounds for your customers, which are accompanied by unnecessary and immense effort!

Before executed the installer, i have clean all temp folder, close all process Adobe, Internet Browser and MS Office, and use the AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool

But the result is same.

When i execute the setup.exe in CC Acrobat DC (X64)\Build\Setup\APRO18.0\Adobe Acrobat i don't have issue but i can't use this setup for deploy with SCCM

For information, with other product created by CCP (Photoshop, After Effects, FireWorks, etc..) the package work correctly.

Can you help please ?

if you need i can send the full MSI log (5.6Mo)

Thanks you

Adobe Customization Wizard allows users to click "cancel" during install!

This is pretty simple, it is determined by whatever switches are being passed by the Adobe Setup.exe but the way it is now, when you create a custom install using the Adobe Customization Wizard and run Acrobat DC via Setup.exe, it allows the user to cancel install, as the "cancel" dialog is there and displayed to the user. If Adobe would just pass the "/QB-!" switches to the MSI for the basic UI, it would also suppress this ability but I don't think there is a way for me to change this programatically. Having it run hidden is not a good workaround either as we try and never run hidden when possible, too many users mistake slow response for "needing a reboot". Is there any workaround for this?!

I understand the /q switches well and I see the line that reads "When using the bootstrapper, command line parameters can be sent to msiexec from Setup.ini using /msi" but I'd like to see the proper syntax as I already tried a few variations before posting this (it just seemed like this might work when I looked at the Setup.ini. IN fact the existing Setup.ini has these 2 lines already:

[Product]

msi=AcroPro.msi

...

...

CmdLine=TRANSFORMS="AcroPro.mst"

I tried adding to the CmdLine and that didn't work, should I append to the existing msi= line (the explanation shows a slash /msi but that seems wrong?), that seems to only expect the name of the msi to call? Any example of the proper syntax would be very welcome...

Without providing the cmds that didn't work, commenting on that is somewhat difficult.

I wouldn't try to use the ini file to pass cmds. Just do it on the cmd line and it's easier to troubleshoot (because then you don't have to troubleshoot the ini file itself).

I don't understand exactly what this means:

"When using the bootstrapper, command line parameters can be sent to msiexec from Setup.ini using /msi"

Does it mean add lines to the INI or pass them to the exe by adding /MSI along with the command, this is why an example would help, just show me how and where to pass "/QB-!" to the MSI...

Thank you again,

Jack

Again, do it on the cmd line and post your line if it fails.

msiexec/i<path\AcroPro.msi>LANG_LIST=en_USTRANSFORMS="1033.mst"  /qb-!

I would have done this by choice initially but I can't run the MSI directly if I want to use the Offline Licensing feature, which seems to be performed by the Setup.exe. This should be simple, you guys are already passing "/QB" to the MSI when I choose "Unattended, only a progress UI" in the Customization Wizard, someone there knows how this is passed and if what I want is possible. We're talking in circles it seems, I have 25 years packaging experience, I assure you I do understand how MSI's work. I simply need to suppress the ability to cancel when launched from Setup.exe, something you guys could easily have done if you wrote the wizard to pass "/QB-!" instead if "/QB", maybe this simply isn't possible...

Yes, if run via MSI directly it works as I need, but again, I have to run it from Setup.exe...

I'm not an expert in this area. According to the doc, this looks possible:

CmdLine=/sAll /qb!+ /[addmoreswitcheshere]

Try and post back. In the meantime, I'll ping some sharper pencils.
