Re: How can I index PDFs that reside on a Unix server?

Well, search engines aren't generic. You'd have to look at the features of each one. Features could include

- no PDF searching

- PDF searching by spidering (like Google)

- PDF searching by reading lists of files (no need for HTML links)

- PDF searching by add-ons

Typically per-machine searching doesn't use spidering, which introduces delays and uncertainty, but it's the only game in town if you are Google.

I appreciate your response, however it did not answer the question I asked, nor the one Mr. Bailey asked. Since I'm here, please allow me to point something out.

You are obviously knowledgable. However, not everyone needs to know the entire spectrum of possibilities. If you read my question, I made it very specific. It's a cornerstone question, necessary before you can build to more advanced options. Most people asking this specific question are not looking to obtain specialized networking gear. They want to know if the contents of a PDF file they put on their website can be indexed by the search engine with 84% market share. After that, they start to look at more specialized scenarios. Why spend time researching advanced options before you know whether they are needed?

You can choose to respond, or not, but there's no value to me unless you begin at the beginning. Also, I put this on an Adobe forum in the hope that an Adobe employee could answer it. No offense, but MVP or not, I have no way to determine whether your answer is authoritative in this case.

This is a community forum, not a way to get support from Adobe. I didn't mention specialised networking gear in my last reply.  I don't know what Unix search engine has 84% market share, but why not ask in their forum, it certainly won't be an Adobe product? I would have something to say involving an Adobe product if it were Windows, but clearly it isn't - the original poster is happy to know it can be done for Windows.

Chuck Lynn, I'm not sure I see the connection to this discussion? Or any earlier message to go back to? Is this actually a brand new problem?

If you can, update to 11.0.09 and see if the issue is fixed.

11.0.9 changes the way graphical signing works - need advice

$

After applying 11.0.9 to our  Acrobat installation, users are no longer able to place a graphic signature like they once could.  The option to do so just vanished.  Instead they may only choose "Work with Certificates"

I have tracked down the cause of this change and how to re-enable that feature, but before doing so on a large scale, I would like to better understand the implications.

http://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/PrefRef/Windows/Workflows.html

When deploying Acrobat XI we customized the settings using the installation wizard.  One of the settings bEnableAcrobatHSwe have configured to prevent integration with Adobe.com.  We found it desireable to remove internet/social/cloud functions in Acrobat in our environment and configuring bEnableAcrobatHS took care of that for us.

According to the document linked above...(the document mentions Reader, but we have found this applies to Acrobat too)

11.0.09 change: In Reader, the Sign Pane is now called Fill and Sign and also contains the form's tools. This bEnableAcrobatHS service master switch disables all features of the Fill and Sign Pane except for the Work with Certificates accordion. When forms are opened, the Fill and Sign Pane does not auto open.

It appears that in order to allow our users to be able to place their graphical signatures on PDFs, we must also allow integration with Adobe.com - although the two seem entirely unrelated.

What does placing graphical signatures have to do with Adobe.com integration?  What are the other implications of setting bEnableAcrobatHS to "1"?  I'd like to enable users to place signatures on documents, but not if it means that I have to open up access to Adobe.com for sharing documents viaa Acrobat, com, CreatePDF online  etc.

The summary of the preference is:

Toggles access to certain Adobe services in Acrobat products (varies across versions) other than shared reviews and forms distribution.

So it toggles all service access off and on for both Acrobat and Reader. EchoSign is a service, and those other signature options you see (all but "work with certificates") are part of EchoSign workflows.

You can change the pref value to one or just delete it altogether.

So is there a way to allow users to paste their signature into a PDF without allowing them to use Acriobat.com services - or is there a way for me to enable only EchoSign?

This is a change in 11.0.9 - so was pasting in a signature not an EchSign service prior to 11.0.9?  or was it an error before that pasting a signature prior to 11.0.9 was not considered an Acrobat.com service?

What else gets enabled besides the ability to paste in signatures in 11.0.9 if I remove that value?

The feature has not changed across 11.x versions. What's changed is your use of bEnableAcrobatHS.

When enabled, the feature lets you create non-cert sig types and drop them on the document. On file save, an EchoSign dialog appears. The user can dismiss the dialog without using any EchoSign service and the signature will still appear in the document.

If you change bEnableAcrobatHS to 1 or delete it, all services access points get added back to the product UI. What appears depends on what product you are talking about. There is not a list of UI items available, but services include EchoSign, Acrobat.com, CreatePDF, ExportPDF, etc.

What you call a "signature" is not really a signature. It's just a graphic. Consider using stamps--perhaps a custom stamp with a signature graphic.

Hi,

I have been able to install Acrobat XI CC successfully using the Cloud Packager and SCCM.

I am tried to create an uninstall program for it however.

I have not been able to find out how to get this done successfully as remenants of the program are still left to the point SCCM things the program is still installed.

Cheers,

I am trying to create a deployment that will uninstall Acrobat Pro CC XI.

The package creator creates 2 MSIs that needs to be installed to install the program one of which being the MSI in the exception folder which gets installed via the ExceptionDeployer. This is fine. The program installs (Although it creates 2 items in Add\Remove Programs) and works as expected.

I want to know how to completely remove Acrobat Pro CC XI. Though. I am currently trying to use the below commands however this doesn't appear to work.

start /wait msiexec.exe /uninstall "Build\Acrobat Pro XI x64.msi" /quiet

msiexec.exe /uninstall "Exceptions\AcrobatProfessional11.0-mul\AcroPro.msi" /quiet

It does remove both items that appear in Add\Remove Programs except it still shows up when listing installed programs via script as well as still showing up in the Registry.(HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVerison\Uninstall\{5A974FBE-3480-42BA-A2 E8-6A887FC7B6F0}. I have tried to pass the uninstall command "MsiExec.exe /X{5A974FBE-3480-42BA-A2E8-6A887FC7B6F0}". It starts to do something and then appears to reverse the progress bar and end without errors.

Will a Japanese Acrobat Pro 11 license work in other regions?

1. If will purchase a Japanese license for the Acrobat Pro 11 but plan on running it on a host server that is located in the US, will the license still work (regional issues)?

2. If I purchase a Japanese license, will it work in other APAC regions or would I have to purchase separate regional licenses for the licenses to work? (Eg, Purchase the license in Japan but use it in Australia).

This is not a detailed answer because I'm not well versed in CC deployment methods and it's late :-); however, can you use the CC docs and the associated tools in APTEE?

I'm also wondering if the registry residue is actually causing you any problems?

There's an uninstaller tool (Cleaner Tool) on LABs, but that should be used as a last resort.

So if I buy the license in Japan, will run it in Japanese, but the server that the license is run on is hosted in the US, I will still be able to use it without problems?

And, if I buy the license in Japan, will run it in English in other countries listed under the APAC region, will I still be able to use the license without problems or will I need to buy licenses locally?

Adobe Reader MSI Release

I am new to trying to roll out Adobe Reader by Group Policy and MSI's and am having trouble creating a new MSI from 11 and the AdbeRdrUpd11009 MSP. I have read many websites on creating the MSI which I have followed and I think I have created it correctly, but does anyone know if Adobe publish a prebuilt MSI for the latest version of the patch or update that I can use ?

Thanks for your help

Yes, you should be able to run the Japanese copy in the U.S. without issue.

The installer is MUI but the serial number is language specific.  So if you license with an English language serial number it will run in English if that is the language specified in the installation.  Note Acrobat's installer does detect the language being used by the OS so that may require specification of the language during the installation process.
