Hi Rave...

We are running Windows 7 Ent 64-bit here (with a few Win 7 Pro sprinkled throughout).  Acrobat DC was deployed using SCCM 2012/2016.  We have 100 users here, 30,000 plus nationwide using that Enterprise license.  The license works perfectly until that update is installed. Then I have to uninstall and reinstall.  Then it works fine again.  The AcroPro.mst file has the registration popup turned off.   It has the product key in place and is set to silent install.  All works fine.  Let me know if you need more details...  Thanks Rave for looking into it.

Hi Tariq

Thanks for the reply.

I already stated in my original post that the plugin is enabled in IE. However I have found out that the PDF will display in the browser if "enached protected mode" is enabled - why's that? Can it be displayed in the browser without this being enabled or is it mandatory for it in order to work?

Thanks in advance

Define Protected View Options

Hi Adobe

I have recently deployed Acrobat Reader DC to my company and we have Protected View set to All files by default however, the end user is able to modify that setting.  I have been exploring the possibility of controlling this setting by a registry key via Group Policy which is easy enough.  But I haven't been able to find anything that defines what "Files from protentially unsafe locations".

Are you able to provide me with what a potentiall unsafe location is please?

It's a very basic definition but it's defined in the Adobe Customization Wizard DC's Help documentation.

Security — Acrobat Customization Wizard DC for Windows

Protected Viewhttp://www.adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/Wizard/WizardDC/security.html#protected- view

Protected View (PV) is a highly secure “super-sandbox” that is essentially a read-only mode. In Protected View, all features are disabled except those associated with viewing (e.g., zoom, navigation, links, find, etc.). Users must select Enable all features if they wish to do anything more than read the PDF. This action assigns trust and adds the document to the users’ list of Privileged Locations. PV behaves identically for Acrobat and Reader whether viewing PDFs in a browser or in a standalone product.

Note

In Reader 11.0, Protected View is only supported when Protected Mode is enabled. There can by no HKCU or HKLM Protected Mode registry preference set to 0 (off) when Protected View is enabled.

There are three configuration options:

  • Off: Disable Protected View.
  • Files from potentially unsafe locations: Open files from the internet or other unknown (and therefore untrusted) sources in Protected View.
  • All files: Open all files in Protected View.

Acrobat 17 Customization tool

I've already come across that document before.

As it states at the top of the document you linked me the customization tool must match the major version of Acrobat. The document only mentions version 15, and the download link from that document - the one in my original message, only has version 15 in it. I need the customization tool for 17, which I can't find anywhere.

Well, I ended up finding the answer to my own question. The "Acrobat Pro.msi" pictured previously isn't the only one downloaded with CCP. A few folders lower there is another "AcroPro.msi" that can be edited by the customization tool. Getting some clarification would have been nice. Also, updating your documentation to state that the latest customization wizard can modify all DC installers despite the difference in versioning would be helpful.

You might have been able to avoid this conundrum when you created the Acrobat installer by using the following Property that is documented in the ETK.

PDF Ownership10.0 & laterLEAVE_PDFOWNERSHIPFor new installs. YES prevents the new installation from taking over PDF ownership. NO allows the new install to own opening PDFs. May interact with IW_DEFAULT_VERB for some versions. It is often used for silent installs where the user should not be asked to select a default PDF viewer.

For 11.0 and later, do not use this property when OWNERSHIP_STATE has a value of 1 or 2. Note: This property is deprecated on Windows 10 machines and DISM-GPO configuration methods must be used.

It cannot be used in an Update scenario.

Re: Adobe Reader DC 2017 update create second shortcut in my start menu programs

Hi Mathg2014, I have the same problem here. After checking a few things, I think I found out why we get a second shortcut. If you copy paste the name of the two shortcuts in Notepad++ and you activate the view the special characters you can see why there's a problem. The first shortcut has the character \xa0, which is a non-breakable space. In other words, it's a special character. You will find this character between Reader and DC. In the other shortcut, it's a space between the word Reader and DC. Therefore, it's not the same shortcut name in the end. So we get this new shortcut. That said, unless Adobe create a new msp to replace the last one there's not much you can do except delete the shortcut version you don't want.

Have a good day!

Guillaume
